Disabled Parking Placard Cost by State (2026)

A permanent disabled parking placard is free in most states — 44 of 50 charge nothing for it. The handful that do are modest: South Carolina ($1), Louisiana ($3), North Carolina ($5), and Tennessee ($21.50–$26.50, waived for wheelchair-confined applicants). Temporary placards sometimes carry a small fee ($2–$15). Every state requires a licensed medical provider to certify the disability.

How do I qualify for a disabled parking placard?

A licensed medical provider (physician, and in most states a nurse practitioner, PA, or optometrist for vision) must certify a qualifying disability on the state application. You then submit it to the motor-vehicle agency in person, by mail, or online.

Does the placard belong to me or my car?

To you. A hanging placard moves between any vehicle you're riding in — you don't need to own the car. Disability license plates, by contrast, are tied to a specific registered vehicle.
