Sales Tax Permit Cost by State (2026)

Registering for a sales-tax permit is free in most states. About a dozen charge a fee — from $12–$16 in Arizona and Colorado up to $100 in Connecticut — and five states (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon) have no state sales tax, so no permit at all. The resale certificate that comes with it is almost always free.

Frequently asked questions

Which states charge for a sales tax permit?

Connecticut ($100) is the highest, then Wyoming ($60), Ohio and South Carolina ($50/location), Arkansas ($50), West Virginia ($30), Indiana ($25/location), Hawaii and Oklahoma and Wisconsin ($20), Colorado ($16), Nevada ($15/location), and Arizona ($12/location). Every other state with a sales tax registers for free.

Which states have no sales tax permit?

The five states with no state sales tax — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon — have no seller's permit. (Alaska has local sales taxes in some boroughs, and Delaware uses a gross-receipts tax instead.)

Is a resale certificate the same as a sales tax permit?

No. The sales-tax permit lets you collect tax from customers; the resale certificate lets you buy inventory tax-free from suppliers. In almost every state the resale certificate is free and self-issued once you have your permit number.

Do I need a sales tax permit in every state I sell to?

Only where you have 'nexus' — a physical presence or enough sales to cross a state's economic-nexus threshold (commonly $100,000 in sales). Once you cross it, you must register in that state before collecting its tax.
