- Ohio defines a moped as having an engine of 50cc or less, no more than 1 brake horsepower, a top speed of 20 mph or less, operable pedals. Exceed any one of those and the vehicle is legally a motorcycle in Ohio — a different (usually higher) fee, and typically a motorcycle license, title, and insurance.
- Ohio's 20 mph cap is one of the lowest in the country — a typical 50cc scooter that reaches 30–35 mph is legally a motorcycle in Ohio, with much higher fees and a motorcycle license.
- The $10 statutory tax becomes roughly $21 out the door once BMV and deputy registrar service fees are added. Ohio does not title mopeds.
