Frequently asked questions
How much does a U.S. passport cost in 2026?
A first-time adult passport book costs $165 total: a $130 application fee paid to the State Department plus a $35 execution fee paid to the acceptance facility. An adult renewal is $130. A first-time minor (under 16) book is $135 ($100 + $35).
What is the execution (acceptance) fee?
The $35 execution fee is charged by the acceptance facility — usually a post office or clerk of court — for verifying your identity and administering the oath on in-person applications. It applies to all first-time applicants and all minors, but not to mail or online renewals.
How much does it cost to expedite a passport?
Expedited processing adds a flat $60 to any application, plus $22.05 if you also want 1–2 day return delivery of the passport book. Urgent travel within 14 days may qualify for an appointment at a passport agency instead.
Can I renew a passport for a child?
No. Passports issued to children under 16 cannot be renewed. Every application for a minor is a new in-person application with both parents or guardians, so the $35 execution fee always applies.
Am I eligible to renew by mail or online?
You can renew (Form DS-82 by mail, or online) if your most recent passport is undamaged and in your possession, was issued when you were age 16 or older, and was issued within the last 15 years. Otherwise you must apply in person as a first-time applicant.
What is the passport file search fee?
If you can't submit evidence of citizenship and instead ask the State Department to search its records for your previous passport or consular birth record, a $150 file search fee applies.
