California Vehicle Registration Fee Calculator

California registration stacks several fees: a base registration fee, the CHP fee, the value-based Vehicle License Fee (0.65% of your vehicle's depreciated purchase price), the tiered Transportation Improvement Fee, and county add-ons. Because two of the fees scale with vehicle value, a new $60,000 vehicle can cost $700+ per year to register while an older economy car may run under $200. EVs from model year 2020 onward pay an additional Road Improvement Fee.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my California registration go up?

The base registration fee and Transportation Improvement Fee are indexed to inflation and adjust most years. If you bought a newer or more expensive vehicle, the VLF and TIF tiers also increase with value.

Is any part of California registration tax-deductible?

Only the Vehicle License Fee portion — it is a value-based tax. The DMV breaks it out on your renewal notice for this reason.

How much are California late registration penalties?

Penalties scale with how late you are: 10% of fees within 10 days, up to 60% of the VLF plus weight fees when more than two years late, with parallel penalty amounts on the registration fee.
