Cost to Register a Car After Moving to Indiana
Moving to Indianameans re-titling and re-registering your vehicle as a new resident — and usually transferring your license and passing any required inspection first. Here's the full cost and the order to do it in, computed from Indiana's current fee schedule.
One-time costs when you arrive
- Title fee$15.00
- One-time total$15.00
Your ongoing annual cost
For a typical three-year-old gas vehicle, expect about $213.64 per year — driving an EV changes that to $455.64. Indiana stacks a $21.35 registration fee, a $15 Transportation Infrastructure Improvement Fee, county wheel/surtaxes, and — the big variable — an annual excise tax set by the vehicle's original MSRP class and age: from $532 for the newest expensive vehicles down to a $12 floor. For 2026, EVs add a $242 supplemental fee and all hybrids $81 (both indexed annually).
Inspection you'll need before Indiana will register it
Indiana requires an emissions test in Lake and Porter counties (northwest Indiana) (free). You must pass it before the state will issue or renew your registration, so budget the time as well as the fee.
Transfer your out-of-state driver's license
New residents also swap their license. In Indiana a license runs $17.50 to transfer, then $17.50 to renew every 6 years, issued by the Indiana BMV. A REAL ID-compliant license costs no extra. Do this before you register — most states want a local license or proof of residency on the registration application.
Before you budget
- Excise amounts approximate the official 17-class schedule — BMV-quoted amounts may differ modestly.
- County wheel/surtax varies by county and is not itemized.
Registering in Indiana: common questions
What is the Indiana vehicle excise tax?
An annual tax collected with registration, set by which of 17 value classes your vehicle's original MSRP falls into and its age. A new $45,000 vehicle starts around $500/yr and decays each year toward the $12 floor that old vehicles pay.
Why is my Indiana renewal more than $21.35?
The registration fee is only the start: every renewal adds the $15 infrastructure fee, your county's wheel tax or surtax, and the excise tax — which dwarfs the rest for newer vehicles.
