New Jersey registration depends on weight and age: a car under 3,500 lbs is $46.50/yr once it's more than two model years old ($59 when newer); a heavier car is $71.50 ($84 when newer). The title fee is $60. EVs owe a ZEV fee of $270 for the year beginning July 2026 (rising $10 each July), and new EVs pay four years up front.

Inspection you'll need before New Jersey will register it

New Jersey requires an emissions/smog test (free at state inspection lanes). You must pass it before the state will issue or renew your registration, so budget the time as well as the fee. New Jersey dropped its safety inspection in 2010 but requires a biennial emissions test. New vehicles are exempt for their first 5 model years.
