  • Title fee
    $5.00
  • One-time total$5.00

Your ongoing annual cost

For a typical three-year-old gas vehicle, expect about $74.00 per year. New Mexico registers passenger vehicles by weight and age, and raised fees 25% on July 1, 2026. A car under 5 years old pays $33.75 (≤2,000 lbs), $48.75 (2,001–3,000), or $70 (over 3,000) per year; vehicles 5+ years old pay about 20% less. Renewing online takes 5% off. The title fee is $5 and a 4% excise tax applies at purchase.

Inspection you'll need before New Mexico will register it

New Mexico requires an emissions test in Bernalillo County (Albuquerque) (about $25). You must pass it before the state will issue or renew your registration, so budget the time as well as the fee.

Transfer your out-of-state driver's license

New residents also swap their license. In New Mexico a license runs $18.00 to transfer, then $18.00 to renew every 4 or 8 years, issued by the New Mexico MVD. A REAL ID-compliant license costs no extra. Do this before you register — most states want a local license or proof of residency on the registration application.

Before you budget

  • Add about $4 in fixed statutory fees (MFRA, beautification, tire-recycling) per registration.
  • EV ($70) and plug-in hybrid ($35) fees begin January 1, 2027 — not yet charged.
