For a typical three-year-old gas vehicle, expect about $36.00 per year — driving an EV changes that to $236.00. Ohio charges $36 for annual passenger registration (raised $5 in January 2026) plus local permissive taxes of $5–$30 depending on your taxing district. EVs pay an additional $200, plug-in hybrids $150, and conventional hybrids $100.
Inspection you'll need before Ohio will register it
Ohio requires an emissions test in 7 northeast Ohio counties (Cuyahoga/Cleveland, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Summit) (free). You must pass it before the state will issue or renew your registration, so budget the time as well as the fee. Biennial E-Check in the Cleveland area only — Cincinnati and Dayton are NOT included. No safety inspection anywhere in Ohio.
Transfer your out-of-state driver's license
New residents also swap their license. In Ohio a license runs $27.50 to transfer, then $30.25 to renew every 4 or 8 years, issued by the Ohio BMV. A REAL ID-compliant license costs no extra. Do this before you register — most states want a local license or proof of residency on the registration application.
