Cost to Register a Car After Moving to Utah

Moving to Utahmeans re-titling and re-registering your vehicle as a new resident — and usually transferring your license and passing any required inspection first. Here's the full cost and the order to do it in, computed from Utah's current fee schedule.

One-time costs when you arrive

  • Title fee
    $6.00
  • One-time total$6.00

Your ongoing annual cost

For a typical three-year-old gas vehicle, expect about $154.00 per year — driving an EV changes that to $334.00. Utah charges a $44 registration fee (CPI-indexed) plus an age-based uniform fee in lieu of property tax: $150 for vehicles under 3 years old, $110 to 6 years, $80 to 9, $50 to 12, and $10 after that. The 2026 EV fee is $180 — matching the Road Usage Charge cap you can opt into instead — with plug-in hybrids around $62 and conventional hybrids $24.

Inspection you'll need before Utah will register it

Utah requires an emissions test in 5 counties (Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, Weber, Cache) ($20–$40). You must pass it before the state will issue or renew your registration, so budget the time as well as the fee. Utah removed its safety inspection in 2018; emissions is required in the 5 Wasatch Front counties.

Transfer your out-of-state driver's license

New residents also swap their license. In Utah a license runs $52.00 to transfer, then $52.00 to renew every 5 years, issued by the Utah Driver License Division. A REAL ID-compliant license costs no extra. Do this before you register — most states want a local license or proof of residency on the registration application.

Registering in Utah: common questions

What is Utah's uniform fee?

An age-based charge in lieu of personal property tax, collected with registration: $150 for vehicles under 3 years old, stepping down to $10 at 12+ years.

Can I avoid Utah's $180 EV fee?

You can enroll in the Road Usage Charge program instead — 1.25¢ per mile in 2026, capped at the $180 flat fee, so light drivers pay less.
