How Much Does It Cost to Register a Boat in Florida?
In Florida, boat registration is handled by the county tax collector (agent for FLHSMV) and renews annually. The fee is based on boat length — from $10.75 for the smallest class up to $195 for the largest per year. Non-motorized craft like kayaks and canoes are generally exempt (check local rules for sailboats). Boats with motors — including trolling motors on otherwise unpowered craft — almost always require registration.
Cost by boat size
| Boat | Per year | One-time (title etc.) |
|---|---|---|
| 14-ft motorboat | $21.50 | $5.25 |
| 20-ft motorboat | $34.00 | $5.25 |
| 28-ft motorboat | $83.50 | $5.25 |
| Kayak/canoe (no motor) | Free — exempt from registration | |
- Totals include the mandatory $5.25 in service/aquatic-plate/manatee fees. Seventeen counties add an optional county fee of roughly 50% of the base.
- Non-motorized vessels under 16 ft — and canoes/kayaks at any length — are exempt. Discounted rates apply if you own an EPIRB or PLB.
