Cost to Register a Car After Moving to Missouri
Moving to Missourimeans re-titling and re-registering your vehicle as a new resident — and usually transferring your license and passing any required inspection first. Here's the full cost and the order to do it in, computed from Missouri's current fee schedule.
One-time costs when you arrive
- Title fee$8.50
- One-time total$8.50
Your ongoing annual cost
For a typical three-year-old gas vehicle, expect about $467.25 per year — driving an EV changes that to $617.25. Missouri registers passenger cars by taxable horsepower ($18.25–$51.25/yr) plus a $9 processing fee, and vehicles owe an annual county personal-property tax billed separately: value assessed at 33⅓%, times your local levy. Pick your county and enter your MSRP for the full bill. Levies run about $4.50–$7.90 per $100 of assessed value.
Inspection you'll need before Missouri will register it
Missouri requires a biennial safety inspection and an emissions test in the St. Louis metro (St. Louis City, St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson, Franklin counties) (safety up to $12; emissions up to $24). You must pass it before the state will issue or renew your registration, so budget the time as well as the fee. A biennial safety inspection is required for older/higher-mileage vehicles; emissions applies in the St. Louis metro. A 2026 repeal bill passed the House but is not yet law.
Transfer your out-of-state driver's license
New residents also swap their license. In Missouri a license runs $33.00 to transfer, then $33.00 to renew every 6 years, issued by the Missouri Department of Revenue. A REAL ID-compliant license costs no extra. Do this before you register — most states want a local license or proof of residency on the registration application.

Registering in Missouri: common questions
How is the Missouri personal property tax on cars calculated?
The car's market value assessed at 33⅓%, times your local levy (about $4.50–$7.90 per $100). On a $20,000 car in St. Louis County that's roughly $500/yr, billed by your county collector separately from registration.
